Doctor fulfills promise for ‘fantastic show’ when child with rare gene defect recovers

Jan 3, 2019

It is difficult for families with young children who are hospitalized to stay in the facility for prolonged periods. In Germany, one doctor has a way of bringing joy to his little patient and the family, and it is through dancing.

Little Gerrit, from Wiesbaden, Germany, suffers from a rare gene defect called MOPD type 1, which caused him to be prone to infection. Since there are only 10 people in the world currently known to be suffering from the rare condition, Gerrit’s family created Facebook page “Unser Kleiner HELD / Gerrit’s Welt” to raise awareness.

Einen wunderschönen guten MorgenWochenanfang..Was für turbulente drei Tage die nun hinter mir liegen. Freitag das…

In April 2018, a video was uploaded showing a doctor from Horst-Schmidt-Kliniken hospital dancing for Gerrit, who was hospitalized and in intensive care for four weeks. One of Gerrit’s doctors had promised to put on a show for him when he got better. And true to his words, the doctor put on a nearly four-minute dance routine for Gerrit and his family, leaving everyone in awe.

Wanting to share the happy moment, the family uploaded the short performance to Facebook.

“There are moments in life, when all the weight just falls from your shoulders,” wrote the family, reported Yahoo 7. “There are also moments when you are allowed to have fun and laugh. Last night was such a moment.”

The family explained that the doctor told them a few days earlier that, “If the little guy is fine, then he dances.”

“These almost four minutes brought so much joy,” the family wrote.

Lieben guten Morgen3 Wochen..Heute etwas später als gewohnt. Aber wir haben Euch nicht vergessen.Gerade sind Wir…

They also took the opportunity to thank all the doctors at the hospital for taking good care of Gerrit.

“We wholeheartedly thank you for fighting for Gerrit over the last four weeks and never giving up on him,” the Facebook post read. “We cried a lot and laughed a lot but you were always there for us to talk to.”
